Q: How long does rail usually take? How fast do the trains travel?
A: Amtrak has trains that can reach speeds up to 125 mph, however most Long Distance trains have a top speed of 79 mph. The travel time depends on the route...
Q: What kinds of accommodations are available to me on a train? How much leg room does the average seat have? Do the seats recline? Are there separate cabins available for groups of people?
A: On Long Distance trains, you have reserved coach seats, standard bedrooms (2) people, bedrooms (3) people, family bedrooms (5) people and handicap (2) people.
Q: What types of dining accommodations are available? Are there snacks available on the trains or should I pack some snacks for in-between meals? How beverages served? Is there alcohol allowed or available during the trip?
A: On most Long Distance trains there are full service Lounge cars, that serves drinks and lite snacks, sandwiches. Trains also have a dinning car that is sit down restaurant style order off the menu (sleepers meals are included).
Q: How much luggage can I carry on? Are there over-head luggage compartments? Do the private cabins have space for luggage? How much luggage can I check-in?
A: You are limited to (2) carry on bags that will fit into the overhead (coach) Space is very limited in the standard bedroom. Most sleepers have a extra luggage storage on the lower level (Superliner equipment). You can check your bags at most staffed stations.
Q: Is the train assigned seating or do people have tickets to certain areas?
A: Coach seating is first come, sometimes you will be assigned a car number which is determined by your destination.
