F.A.Q.
Here we have some common, general questions about rail travel. If you have a detailed question to ask us, then check out our Ask Larry section to see if it has been answered. Also feel free to e-mail Larry about any question you have and we'll either post the answer here or in the Ask Larry section.
Q: How soon do I need to make a reservation?
A: With sleeper space, the sooner the better.
Q: Can I get a refund if I don't travel?
A: In most cases you will receive a partial credit.
Q: How does meal service work on trains?
A: Onboard Amtrak or Via Rail booked in sleepers your meals are included in the price of your ticket, the only items you would pay for on Amtrak is alcohol, on Via Rail they charge for alcohol and soft drinks. On Amtrak breakfast is first come first served and can start at 6 am (check with your sleeping car attendant) lunch and dinner are by reservation.
Q: What should I tip for service on the trains?
A: Tipping for good service is always a good idea, in the diner it's always a good idea to use at least the 15% rule. Remember, in sleepers meals are included but not tips. Before you go on your train trip make sure you have a good supply of $1's, $5's and $10's. It's hard to make change on the train. Tipping in the Lounge or Parlour Car is not required, however it's good to reward good service. When tipping your sleeping car attendant use the $10 per person, per day, per room rule.
Q: What are some general rules about packing and luggage?
A: Pack lite - space in the sleeping cars is very limited and not all stations have checked baggage.
Q: What do I do if I need assistance with my luggage?
A: Most larger stations have "Red Caps" that will assist you with your luggage and make sure you get out to your train. Some smaller stations can assist you if there is a special needs request. Keep in mind not all stations are staffed.
Q: What can I expect in the waiting areas of the stations?
A: Stations like Boston, New York, Philadelphia and Washington DC have Club Acela(sm) Lounges that as an inbound sleeper or outbound sleeper passenger you can use. Other stations have a Metropolitan lounge, Chicago, Portland OR. These lounges have nice seating areas, complimentary beverages and some snacks. Some of the lounges have free internet . The Miami, New Orleans, Raleigh and St. Paul stations have a first class waiting area unstaffed.
Q: Should I bring my own food or will I be able to purchase meals on the train?
A: Not all Amtrak trains have full service dining cars, we will let you know what you train has when you book your trip.
Q: How much layover time do I need when scheduling a connecting train?
A: When making connections it is not a good idea to make same day connection for some trains. Trains can run late, so when we book your trip we will let you know which ones work for connections.
Q: How good is the security on the trains?
A: You should keep medications and valuables with you at all times.
